So many of you will know now about the closure of equinox.
Its seems such a long time ago now that Guenter got in touch with me through myspace about the possibility of working with equinox. I have to admit I didn’t know too much about the label but upon looking further realised that it would be a good platform for me and my music.
The artwork was the first thing that struck me. The simple and highly affective use of just two colours on every release and the meticulous way he crafted the pieces together from snippets of old album covers.
Listening through the first sound exposure album gave me a good insight into what the label was all about and upon listening to Guenters music under his scientist moniker I realised we weren’t too far away from each other musically. This gave me more confidence that it was the right label for me.
I then sent him over what was to become my ‘wyred folk’ ep. He immediately agreed to release it and set about making that beautiful cover below. I was really into psychedelic folk music at the time and made up the word wyred which was a fusion of two words wired and wyrd (a term used for weird folk music) It all came together really nicely and was the perfect start to our new relationship.
In 2007 we went on tour to promote the release of equinox’s second compilation, one year and a day .It was the first time id been on tour and was also the first time I got to go out to parts of europe i hadn’t experienced before. I was nervous as hell before hand but it turned out to be one of the best times of my life. Playing alongside Ceschi, Sci, Noah 23 and snatchetech almost every night for 3 weeks turned out to be a big inspiration for me. I learned a lot on that tour which helped me develop my live show further…
In october 2009 we released my debut album “a world without” alongside the “one by one ep”. As always they were vinyl/cd releases put together with the same love, care and attention to detail I had become accustomed to from equinox.
It took some time for my next album “the small minority” to drop, but finally along with the “outside your doorway’ ep it was released in may 2012. Again it was something I am very proud of. the amazing inner art was drawn by Sophie web while guenter put together the striking front cover.
We also released a double postcard at the same time thanks to the postman’s love guys. The artwork this time was done by the amazingly talented toobz muir whilst Guenter again finished the release off with a package that housed the two postcards and made it all stand out that bit more!
One other thing Guenter did for me was to re-release my first ever ep ‘divided reality’ which i put out myself before joining equinox. He repackaged the 30 records I had left and as you can see it was another beautiful release!
So it is with a heavy heart we say goodbye to equinox records. Im immensly proud of mr Stoppel for achieving so much in the brief time eqx was here and in the face of adversity and ongoing politics in the music industry.
I would also like to add a BIG thankyou! Not just for the dope releases but the people i have met through it, the experience and knowledge I have gained in many different areas can only help take me further as a person and music producer.
